What Are Meta Tags?
Meta tags are snippets of HTML code that describe your page's content to search engines. They don't appear on the page itself — they live in the section of your HTML. Despite being invisible to visitors, they heavily influence how your page appears in Google search results.
Title Tags: Your #1 Ranking Factor
The title tag is arguably the single most important on-page SEO element. It appears as the clickable blue link in search results and in the browser tab.
Title Tag Best Practices
- Keep it under 60 characters (Google truncates after ~580 pixels)
- Put your primary keyword near the beginning
- Include your brand name at the end
- Make it compelling — it's an ad for your page
- Each page must have a unique title
Meta Descriptions: Your Click Magnet
Meta descriptions don't directly affect rankings, but they massively impact click-through rate. A well-written meta description can be the difference between a click and a scroll-past.
Meta Description Best Practices
- 150-160 characters is the sweet spot
- Include your target keyword (Google bolds matching terms)
- Include a call-to-action ("Learn how...", "Discover...", "Try free...")
- Accurately describe the page content
- Don't duplicate across pages
Other Important Meta Tags
Open Graph Tags
These control how your page appears when shared on social media (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter). Always set og:title, og:description, and og:image.
Robots Meta Tag
Controls whether search engines index your page and follow its links. Default is index/follow — you only need to change this for pages you want to exclude from search.
