Calculate your actual GST payable after claiming Input Tax Credit (ITC). ITC = GST you paid on purchases, which reduces your GST liability.

OUTPUT (GST Collected on Sales)

INPUT (GST Paid on Purchases)

Net GST Payable to Government
What is ITC? When you buy goods/services for your business, you pay GST. This GST paid is your Input Tax Credit. You can subtract it from the GST you collect from your customers. You only pay the difference to the government. This prevents tax-on-tax (cascading effect).

Under Reverse Charge Mechanism (RCM), the buyer pays GST to the government instead of the seller. The good news: you can claim this as ITC!

Common RCM Scenarios:
  • Services from unregistered suppliers (if aggregate >₹5,000/day)
  • Legal services from advocates
  • Transportation by Goods Transport Agency (GTA)
  • Security services from individual/firm
  • Rent-a-cab services
  • Import of services
  • Sponsorship services

For small businesses with turnover up to ₹1.5 crore (₹75 lakh for special category states). Pay GST at a flat rate on turnover instead of regular GST on each invoice.

Composition Scheme
Regular GST (18%)
Composition scheme is simpler, but you:
  • Cannot collect GST from customers
  • Cannot claim Input Tax Credit (ITC)
  • Cannot do inter-state sales
  • Must file quarterly returns (CMP-08), not monthly
  • Must mention "Composition Taxable Person" on every invoice

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is India's unified indirect tax that replaced multiple central and state taxes (VAT, excise, service tax, etc.) on July 1, 2017. Every product and service in India (except a few exempted items and petroleum) carries a GST rate.

GST 2.0 — The Biggest Overhaul Since 2017

At the 56th GST Council meeting, India simplified its rate structure from 5 slabs to 4 slabs, effective September 22, 2025. The old 12% and 28% slabs were abolished. Most 12% items moved to 5%, most 28% items moved to 18%, and a new 40% slab was created for sin goods and luxury items. Health and life insurance premiums became fully exempt (0%).

Understanding GST Types

CGST + SGST: For transactions within the same state, GST is split equally between Central GST and State GST. IGST: For inter-state transactions, Integrated GST is charged at the full rate. The total tax amount is the same — only the split differs.

Frequently Asked Questions

As of September 22, 2025, India has 4 main GST slabs: 0% (exempt) for essentials like fresh food, education, health insurance; 5% for daily-use items like packaged food, medicines, soap; 18% for most goods and services including electronics, cement, IT services; and 40% for luxury/sin goods like tobacco, aerated drinks, premium cars. Special rates of 0.25% (rough diamonds) and 3% (gold/silver) also exist.

CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) are charged on transactions within the same state — each is half the total GST rate. IGST (Integrated GST) is charged on inter-state transactions at the full rate. Example: 18% GST on an intra-state sale = 9% CGST + 9% SGST. Same sale inter-state = 18% IGST. The total tax amount is identical.

The 56th GST Council meeting simplified the rate structure: the 12% slab was abolished (most items moved to 5%), the 28% slab was abolished (most items moved to 18%), and a new 40% slab was created for sin/luxury goods. Major beneficiaries: ACs, TVs, washing machines, cement (28%→18%), health/life insurance (18%→0%), soaps, medicines (moved to 5%). Tobacco and aerated drinks moved to 40%.

ITC allows businesses to subtract the GST paid on purchases from the GST collected on sales. You only pay the difference to the government. Example: if you collect ₹90,000 GST on sales and paid ₹54,000 GST on purchases, you deposit only ₹36,000. ITC prevents tax-on-tax (cascading). To claim ITC: the supplier must have filed their return, you must have a valid tax invoice, and the goods/services must be used for business purposes.

Under RCM, the buyer (instead of the seller) is responsible for paying GST to the government. This applies when buying from unregistered suppliers, receiving legal services from advocates, transportation by GTA, security services, and import of services. The buyer pays GST separately to the government and can claim ITC on the same amount — so the net cost impact is zero for registered businesses.

The Composition Scheme is a simplified GST option for small businesses with turnover up to ₹1.5 crore (₹75 lakh for NE states). Instead of charging GST on each invoice, you pay a flat rate on total turnover: 1% for manufacturers/traders, 5% for restaurants, 6% for service providers. Trade-offs: you can't claim ITC, can't collect GST from customers, can't do inter-state sales, and must file quarterly (not monthly) returns.

Use our "Find Rate" tab — search 200+ common products and services with their HSN (goods) or SAC (services) codes and GST 2.0 rates. For example, search "laptop" to find HSN 8471 at 18%, or "CA services" to find SAC 9982 at 18%. For items not in our database, check the official GST portal (gst.gov.in) or consult a Chartered Accountant.
