The Science Behind Pet Age Calculation
The old "multiply by 7" rule for dogs is a myth. Dogs age much faster in their first two years and then the rate varies by size. Our calculator uses AKC-recommended size-adjusted formulas and optionally the 2019 UCSD epigenetic logarithmic formula published in Cell Systems.
Why Size Matters for Dogs
Small dogs age slower after maturity and can live 14-16 years, while giant breeds age faster and typically live 7-10 years. A 7-year-old Chihuahua is about 44 in human years, while a 7-year-old Great Dane is about 59.
Indoor vs Outdoor Cats
Indoor cats typically live 12-18 years while outdoor cats average 2-5 years. Our calculator adjusts for lifestyle — a feature most competitors don't offer.

No. Dogs age 15 human years in their first year, 9 more by year two, then 4-7 per year depending on size. Our calculator uses the AKC-recommended formula.
Large dogs age at an accelerated pace — their bodies grow faster, increasing the risk of age-related diseases. A Great Dane averages 7-8 years while a Chihuahua can live 15-16.
A 2019 UC San Diego study analyzed DNA methylation in 104 Labrador Retrievers and found human_age = 16 × ln(dog_age) + 31. A 1-year-old dog is biologically about 31, not 7.
Yes. Indoor cats live 12-18 years while outdoor-only cats average 2-5 years due to traffic, predators, diseases, and weather risks.
Bobi (dog) lived to 31 years. Crème Puff (cat) lived to 38. Jonathan the tortoise, born ~1832, is still alive at 190+ years.
