How Dog Years Are Really Calculated
The "multiply by 7" rule is wrong. Dogs mature rapidly in their first two years, then the rate depends on size.
AKC Size-Adjusted Formula
- Small (<20 lb): +4 human years per dog year after age 2
- Medium (21-50 lb): +5 per year
- Large (51-100 lb): +6 per year
- Giant (100+ lb): +7 per year
UCSD Epigenetic Formula
A 2019 study published in Cell Systems found that dog aging follows human_age = 16 × ln(dog_age) + 31, based on DNA methylation patterns in 104 Labrador Retrievers.
Why Breed Matters
A Great Dane averages 7-8 years lifespan while a Chihuahua can live 15-16. Our 150+ breed database includes average lifespans and auto-detected size categories.
